The year/month/day breakdown is computed by comparing calendar fields directly and borrowing from the next unit when a component goes negative (the same logic you’d do by hand: "if today’s day-of-month is earlier than the birth day, borrow a month"), so it correctly accounts for varying month lengths and leap years rather than relying on a fixed average days-per-month. Rather than assuming a fixed number of days per month, the calculator compares actual calendar dates directly - when the day-of-month component would go negative (say, comparing the 10th to the 25th of the previous month), it borrows a month and adds the correct number of days from whichever specific month is being borrowed from, so February’s 28 or 29 days and other months’ 30 or 31 days are handled correctly rather than approximated.
