About this tool
Enter a bill amount, pick a tip percentage using either a quick preset (10/15/18/20/25%) or a slider for anything in between, and set how many people are splitting the check - the tip amount, grand total, and per-person amounts for both the tip and the full total update instantly as any value changes. The presets cover the tipping percentages most commonly used in the US for standard, above-average, and generous service, while the slider handles the less common cases without limiting you to a fixed list. Splitting divides evenly across everyone at the table; it doesn't currently support itemized splitting where different people order different amounts, since that's a meaningfully more complex calculation involving per-item assignment rather than a simple division. Useful for quickly settling a group restaurant bill, figuring out an appropriate tip for a delivery or service, or just double-checking a percentage-based tip without doing the math by hand. Runs entirely client-side.

Frequently asked questions
No - this calculator splits the tip and total evenly across everyone, which covers the common case of a group agreeing to split a check equally. Itemized splitting, where each person pays only for what they ordered plus a proportional share of tax and tip, is a meaningfully different calculation requiring per-item assignment, and isn't something this simple, quick tool attempts to handle.
Convention varies by service type and region, but 15-20% is broadly typical for sit-down restaurant service in the US, with 18-20% common for good service and 15% or below sometimes considered a signal of dissatisfaction. The presets here (10/15/18/20/25%) cover that common range plus a below-average and above-average option, and the slider handles anything outside it.
This calculator applies the tip percentage to whatever number you enter as the "bill amount" - if you enter the pre-tax subtotal, the tip is calculated on that; if you enter the post-tax total, the tip is calculated on that instead. Tipping conventions differ on this point, so enter whichever base amount matches the convention you're following.
