Overview
Convert a HEX color code straight into a CMYK value in one step, using the standard device-independent HEX-to-RGB-to-CMYK formula: K is derived from the darkest channel, then C, M, and Y are each derived from how far their channel falls short of that darkest point. This is the reverse direction of this site's existing CMYK to HEX Converter. Like that tool, this is a mathematical approximation, not an ICC color-profile conversion - it doesn't account for a specific printer's ink behavior, so treat the result as a close approximation for screen-to-print planning, not a color-accurate proof of what a printer will produce. A live swatch shows the source color so you can sanity-check it visually. Runs entirely client-side.
Best for: Getting the CMYK value for a HEX color spec without a separate RGB round trip
How to use this tool
- Enter your HEX color. e.g. #FF0000 or #F00.
- Converted via RGB. HEX is parsed to RGB, then RGB to CMYK using the standard K-from-darkest-channel formula.
- See the result and swatch. The CMYK value updates live, with a color preview to confirm it looks right.
Frequently asked questions
Red (255,0,0) has its brightest channel (R) at full 255, so K = 1 - 255/255 = 0. With K at 0, C = 1 - R/255 = 0, while M = 1 - G/255 = 1 (100%) and Y = 1 - B/255 = 1 (100%) - giving 0% cyan, 100% magenta, 100% yellow, 0% black.
When every RGB channel is 0, K = 1 - 0/255 = 1 (100% black), and the formula treats C/M/Y as 0% in that case to avoid a divide-by-zero - pure black is represented purely by the K channel, not by maxing out C, M, and Y as well.
No - this uses the standard device-independent CMYK formula, not a specific printer's ICC color profile. Real print output depends on the printer, ink, and paper, so treat this as a close approximation for planning, not a color-accurate proof.
