Overview
Convert a HEX color code straight into an HSV value (hue in degrees, saturation and value as percentages) in one step, using the standard HEX-to-RGB-to-HSV max/min/delta algorithm. This is the reverse direction of this site's existing HSV to HEX Converter. HSV is often confused with HSL since both describe color as hue/saturation plus a third axis, but they aren't the same model: HSV's third axis (value) is how much white and black are mixed with a pure hue, while HSL's (lightness) is centered on gray - this tool is specifically for HSV, not a relabeled HSL converter. A live swatch shows the source color so you can sanity-check it visually. Runs entirely client-side.
Best for: Getting the HSV value for a color picked or specified in HEX
How to use this tool
- Enter your HEX color. e.g. #FF0000 or #F00.
- Converted via RGB. HEX is parsed to RGB, then RGB to HSV using the standard max/min/delta algorithm.
- See the result and swatch. The HSV value updates live, with a color preview to confirm it looks right.
Frequently asked questions
Red's max channel (255) is R itself, so hue lands at 0 degrees. The delta between max and min channels equals the max channel, giving 100% saturation, and value is simply the max channel scaled to 100%.
When there is no difference between the max and min channel (delta = 0), the color is achromatic (a shade of gray), so hue is defined as 0 and saturation as 0% - only value differs between shades of gray.
HSV and HSL are different color models that happen to share the same hue calculation but diverge on saturation and the third axis - this tool's saturation and value/lightness numbers are HSV-specific and won't match an HSL conversion of the same color.
